The Plant Behind the Oil: Jasmine

Introduction
Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum), often referred to as “Royal Jasmine” or “Spanish Jasmine,” is among the most beloved flowers in the world, cherished for its intoxicating fragrance and its deep roots in human culture, medicine, and the arts. Belonging to the family Oleaceae (the olive family), it is a plant that bridges worlds, ornamental beauty and perfumery, folk medicine and aromatherapy, sensual pleasure and spiritual symbolism.

Though there are over 200 species of jasmine recognized, Jasminum grandiflorum is especially celebrated for its highly fragrant blossoms, which open in the early morning and release their sweet, floral, and slightly fruity aroma. From the gardens of the Himalayas to Mediterranean courtyards, from the stills of essential oil distillers to sacred temples, jasmine has enchanted people for centuries.
