Sauna's origin traces back to ancient times in Finland, referring to a small hut (or earth pit) with a wood-burning fire and hot stones. Water was thrown on the stones to create steam and raise the heat inside the hut. This is a big part of their culture that has evolved over time. So much so that it's quite common for people in modern-day Finland to have saunas in their homes, now equipped with electric heaters. Many cultures around the world have similar traditions of cleansing and purifying with heat and steam. I fondly remember the bathhouse our family used to go to, growing up in Korea.
